What does the Auto button do on an Audi TT?

In amongst all of the climate/air-con controls on my 2002 Audi TT, there is a large button that says Auto. I have no idea what happens when I press this - what is it supposed to do?

1. It is the Audi Automatic Climate Control button, Set the temp to whatever is comfortable and hit the "AUTO" button. The myriad of sensors will keep the interior of the vehicle at the preset temp.
